At least this CAW has me writing again.

I sorta finished a story a while ago, but for some reason, never posted it. It could have been a CAW #17 entry, since two of the characters loved each other at some point, and there are lots of uniforms. But it's too dark. If ejls had made a big deal out of the due date being Halloween, I would have saved it, but I didn't. I'll take any criticism I can get on Reverse Number Look-up. The online stuff is feasible. I found a site about a year ago that told me a lot about a caller, and it didn't cost me a cent.

 

I guess I could just put you all on Ignore, then I wouldn't have to see any of it.

Hmm...I just thought of something. IF I opted to write a story, and IF that story might need outside proof-reading, how would I do that? The rules state this:

You are not allowed to tell anyone which story you took part in writing.

So I'm wondering if there is an exception for allowing one person to proofread your story, or do you need to be anonymous, a la...

"Hey, how's it going? Listen, someone emailed me this story, and said that they had it emailed to them by someone who had it emailed to them, so, no on really knows who wrote it, but, could you proof it and send it back to me and I'll send it to the person who sent it to me and they can................." :excited:

Don't wish to violate the rules, but, also know that many people use proofreaders so I thought perhaps ejls can address that issue.

MY personal take on the use of proofreaders is that they would be held to the same secrecy constraints as the authors - consider them a partner in the creation of the work although they would not necessarily be recognized as a creator.

I may enter a story if I have time, but I may not. If I do, I normally do my own proofing, but others prefer to have a second opinion (I ought to send mine, it does so annoy me when I spot a typo after posting).

Ejls could have everyone e-mail their story to her, and then to its intended proof-reader, so no-one would really know the author, but that's creating a huge workload for herself in addition to running the rest of the compy and Moderating the boards (and possibly even attempting to have A Life as well!).

On the other hand if the proofer promises, "Guides Honour" not to reveal the identity, that would make things a lot less complicated for our host.

 

Good points, and here is my take on the matter, my writing for the CAW is long finished, as stated in an earlier post. In regards to proofing, the writing has been through the initial stages; what I did in regards to a similar question you had Horse was PM to CAW SOP or Ejls is the name of whom is doing the proofing.

Other than that, as I have heard no other rulings or responses on the question this late into the comp, I assume that any proof reader is held to the same secrecy as the author - if either one violates it, then the story goes into the night.

I would consider them as a silent partner in this case, but bound to the same rules of anonymity as the creator/s as the case may be.

In the event of a person having two entries (as permitted) if separate people proof them, then each individual should be held to the same as if one or two stories were proofed by a single person.

 

I think that would put too much of a burden upon her unless someone helped her at her request; that is an idea to consider by a future CAW host who may be interested in doing so.

As Horse, Darthel and you have discussed, I concur that 'Guide's Honor" is what has to take place; one way that will further this is to PM the name of whom has proofed any writing/s for the competition.

Right now, we are roughly a quarter of the way into the CAW, and if the rule changes to where we cannot use a proof reader, then my own writing is gone out the window.

I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to use a proof reader. Ejls knows the value of a proof reader. It's just a question of dotting the i's and crossing the t's so that no one down the road cries "fowl".

I have PM'd ekls a few days ago, pertaining to that question. I wanted to use a proofreader that had already submitted their entry to the CAW 17 and wanted to know if there was any rule disallowing it.

Her response was that I could use whoever I wanted to proofread my work, that there was no objection to what I wanted do.

I'm not about to publish the content of her answering PM, since it is not allowed. So I give you her answer in my own words.

ejls is in an internet black hole this weekend (having a life), so she won't be able to respond to the proofreader question until tonight. In recent CAWs, however, when we had anonymity as a condition, proofreaders were always permitted and encouraged. As others have said, proofreaders in the past were held to the same rules about disclosure as writers. It seems logical that we would do things the same way this time.
